The Cottage Retriever™ has been carefully developed for families who love the idea of welcoming home a Retriever in to their family, but are looking for a smaller sized dog.
This specific litter, is a rare opportunity within Australia - to adore your very own Retriever style dog, at less than half the size!
Our Matilda x Merlin puppies in particular will mature around the 10kg mark, with some puppies maturing closer to 15kg - others will be under 10kg as fully grown adult dogs.
Selectively bred to achieve the beloved Retriever traits, in a smaller and completely adorable package!

Meet their mum, Matilda! Matilda is mum to our current litter, and depicts everything we have been working towards - and are incredibly proud of. Matilda is affectionate and kind-hearted, with a sociable yet placid nature. Calm and content, with a laid back demeanour - though maintaining a welcoming approach. Versatile and adaptable, with the capacity for physical activity and endurance - without being boisterous or hyperactive. Maintaining a docile nature, Matilda is the most fabulous family dog - who is sturdy enough to withstand play, without being a large and exuberant dog. The Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever - have long been an Aussie family favourite!
Nowadays, many families still love these breeds - but are unable to accommodate such a large breed dog, pairing what is often such a high energy level and exceptional strength - these big dogs can be a hazard for some homes.
Here at Cottage Canines - we have spent over a decade working on a smaller version of both the Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever.
It has been proven that the First Generation Retriever crosses - will often inherit the large breed traits, which have been bigger in size and often equivalent to a pure bred Lab or Goldie.
As such, we have begun working on multigenerational crosses, to taper down the sizing - and further refine the features we are looking for.
Our breed in development The Miniature Cottage Retriever™ has been a great success, and example of everything we are striving for and working towards.
If you have been dreaming of Retriever type, but want a small breed dog - you have likely already considered and discovered other similar mixes such as the Cavador, Golden Cavalier, Spanador, Golden Cocker, Spaniel Retriever, LabraSpeagle, Comfort Retriever - and potentially even the Groodle!
Each and every one of these crosses is beautiful in their own right, though the primary hinderance is that many of these F1 (first generation) cross breeds still have the potential to exceed 30-35kg, effectively maturing to the same sort of size of a traditional purebred Retriever breed.
When considering a true F1b type dog, the genetically dominant breed will often have an overpowering influence on majority of the puppies born - in which case much of the desired Retriever qualities are lost.
When it comes to multigenerational crossbreeding, our selective breeding has resulted in great success at establishing a genuine small-medium sized dog once they fully grown and mature, whilst keeping the Retriever appearance and characteristics in mind.
Extensive health testing and screening processes have also been maintained throughout the generations, with our parent dogs exceeding with specialist certification annually - in addition to DNA testing and complete veterinary examinations.

Extensive health testing is imperative, and here at Cottage Canines - we are extremely passionate about appropriately screening our breeding dogs. This ensures only the best genetics are contributing to the puppies we welcome in to this world - and is part of the responsibility that must be upheld when it comes to ethically breeding.
All of our Cavalier and Cavalier cross breeds, are heart certified by a veterinary specialist cardiologist annually.
Every one of our sires, regardless of breed - is also heart certified by a veterinary specialist cardiologist annually.
Each of our studs is also eye certified by a veterinary specialist ophthalmologist annually.
All of our large breed dogs (including any dogs 20kg or more) are hip and elbow scored.
All of our breeding dogs are also DNA tested, for breed specific genetic traits and diseases.
Every parent dog is routinely vaccinated each year.
Complete veterinary examinations are regularly carried on our dogs, at least once a year - with more frequent assessments for those who are actively contributing to our breeding program.
DNA testing alone, is not enough to provide health assurances on dogs prior to being bred from.
Did you know that DNA testing involves sending a once off, saliva sample to laboratory geneticists for analysis?
This can be effectively conducted on puppies as young as 2 weeks of age (essentially once enough salivalry DNA can be collected).
DNA testing is incredibly valuable for determining the genetic traits and diseases that a dog may carry, and aids in selecting suitable dogs who may be compatible to breed together.
DNA testing will not determine the actual health and condition of the dog, and not every condition or potential ailment is testable.
Whilst DNA testing is essential, this alone does not provide enough assurance that a dog is suitable to be bred from.
(For example, a dog who is DNA tested "clear" can still suffer from severe hip dysplasia, heart disease, and cataracts).
All of our health testing records and specialist reports, are available for our future puppy families to view in person.
You will also be able to meet the Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandfather upon collection day.
