Sheepadoodle FAQ's & Stats

Frequently Asked Questions About Sheepadoodles
Understanding the Sheepadoodles
What is a Sheepadoodle?
A Sheepadoodle is the cross breed between an Old English Sheepdog and a Poodle.

What is an F1 Sheepadoodle?
An F1 Sheepadoodle (also referred to as a First Generation Sheepadoodle) means that both parents were pure bred dogs - of different breeds.
The resulting offspring inherit 50% Old English Sheepdog genes, and 50% Poodle genes.

What is an F1b Sheepadoodle?
An F1b Sheepadoodle, is a First Generation Backcross.
This means one parent is an F1 Sheepadoodle, and one parent is a Poodle.
The resulting offspring of an F1b Sheepadoodle are genetically 75% Poodle 25% Old English Sheepdog.
A Reverse Backcross, is when one parent is an F1 Sheepadoodle, and one parent is an Old English Sheepdog.
The resulting offspring of an F1b (Reverse Backcross) Sheepadoodle would be 75% Old English Sheepdog, and 25% Poodle.

What is an F2 Sheepadoodle?
An F2 Sheepadoodle, is bred from crossing F1 Sheepadoodle to another F1 Sheepadoodle.
The resulting offspring are 50% of each breed, but will have reduced hybrid vigour and a smaller genetic diversity - as a result of being a second generation dog.

What is a multigenerational Sheepdaoodle?
A multigenerational Sheepadoodle, means both parents were cross breeds - and neither parent contributed opposing pure bred genetics.
As such, hybrid vigour is diminished - when compared to an F1 or First Generation dog.
Some multigenerational Sheepadoodles are F2, F3 and beyond - with and without backcrosses. These dogs are still very much adorable, however will not have as wide genetic diversity, will not be as predictable, and are less likely to exhibit true Sheepadoodle traits.
Often the lineage is undetermined in these cases, and the dogs bloodline cannot be traced back to where the pure bred dogs were crossed - and what other lines have been introduced.
Some multigenerational Sheepadoodles, often are crossed with Groodle (Golden Retriever x Poodle), Labradoodle (Labrador Retriever x Poodle), Spoodle (Cocker Spaniel x Poodle), Cavoodle (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel x Poodle) - and at times will have been bred with Aussie Shepherd, Border Collie, Koolie or similar.
A multigenerational Sheepadoodle will still remain exceptionally cute, however less predictable and consistent in their "Sheepadoodle" traits. You won't always know what you are getting, when it comes to a multigenerational dog.

What generation is right for me?
For families seeking the traditional Sheepadoodle look, coat, and nature - a true F1 pairing offers the most consistent and reliable outcome. The offspring will also inherit hybrid vigour, and is the most healthy and genetically robust option - thanks to the wider genetic diversity.
For families after more Poodle traits and potential colours, an F1b will be the ideal choice.

Coat Type, Colours, Shedding - What to expect
What colours do Sheepadoodles come in?
Sheepadoodles (particularly F1 or First Generation Sheepadoodles) will always be either black/grey, or black/grey and white).
Varying degrees of white markings, will be dependant upon the Poodle parent and their genetics. Some may have a small amount of white markings (or no white markings at all), and others may have parti markings - and look more like the Old English Sheepdog.

F1b or F2 and beyond, can have the genetic potential to visually represent any colour or markings that would be exhibited in Poodles.
This is where recessive red or chocolate colours become possible.

How do you get merle Sheepadoodles?
Merle is not naturally occurring in Old English Sheepdogs or Poodles. Many have been crossed with Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Koolie, or other similar working breeds - where the merle colour pattern is naturally occurring.
It is not possible for a true Sheepadoodle to be merle in colour.

What about merle Poodles?
Though some dogs are labelled as being "merle Poodles" - even if they genetically test as being a Poodle, they will always have been cross bred in order to inherit the merle colour pattern.
Many outcross programs have bred Aussiedoodls for example, and bred the merle offspring back to a Poodle - in order to retain the colour.
These dogs are continuously bred, in order to achieve a higher Poodle content in their breeding.
After several generations, some of these dogs will genetically test as "Poodle" however this does not erase the cross breeding of their gene pool.
The concerns of this don't lie solely with the cross breeding alone, as this is very much a practice we support and take part in - the concerns lie with unknown genetics.
If a dog is being represented as a "merle Poodle" even if the introduced breed cannot be isolated and determined for that dog - the evidence of cross breeding is made apparent by the merle coat colour pattern. It is often unknown what cross breed was introduced, and this not only affects the coat colour - but also potential health, behaviour, temperament, and any other untestable genes that the dog is either a carrier of or affected by.
Merle Sheepadoodles are not a true physical representation of what a Sheepadoodle is, so one cannot expect their personality, characteristics, or qualities to align with what a Sheepdoodle should be.

So, do Sheepadoodles come in merle?
No. Merle is not naturally occurring in either the Old English Sheepdog or Poodle.
If a "Sheepadoodle" is merle, it indicates that another breed has been introduced into the lineage.
As such, it would not be considered a true Sheepadoodle.

Do Sheepadoodles shed?
No dog is ever truly "hypoallergenic".
Sheepadoodles (true Sheepadoodles that is) will typically have a low to non shedding coat. This makes them a popular choice for families seeking reduced shedding in the home.

What coat types do Sheepadoodles have?
Sheepadoodles mostly have a fleece type coat, that is long and shaggy. Some will have a wool type coat, more like the Poodle - and others may have a wool-fleece blend (combination coat).

What grooming is required?
Sheepadoodles require regular grooming to maintain coat health, comfort, to prevent matting - and ultimately, a "shave down".
Frequency of grooming will be variable upon the coat length you like the look of, and can realistically maintain.
If a long, shaggy, full coat is preferred - you can expect daily brushing and 4 weekly sessions at the grooming salon.
If a mid length coat is preferred, brushing and combing will be required several times per week - with professional grooming every 6 weeks.
If you keep a shorter coat, less at home maintenance will be required - and salon sessions may be every 8-12 weeks.
* If you do not brush or maintain your Sheepadoodle, they will become matted. This is not only uncomfortable, but painful - and complicates grooming sessions. The only solution for a matted Sheepadoodle is a shave down.

Sheepadoodle Size
How big are Sheepadoodles?
A true Sheepadoodle will generally be 20kg-35kg range; regardless as to the size of Poodle that they have been bred from.
As the Old English Sheepdog is a larger dog, their genes do tend to be more dominant.
Even breeding a 3kg Toy Poodle to a 30kg Old English Sheepdog, you can expect majority of the offspring to exceed 20kg.
Some Standard Poodles will also have the potential to produce a puppy with a smaller frame, that matures closer to the 20kg mark (with littermates of the same parents still maturing over 30kg-40kg at times).

Temperament, Lifestyle, and Suitability
What is the temperament of a Sheepadoodle?
Sheepadoodles are renowned for being affectionate, intelligent, fun loving, and incredibly sociable and family friendly dogs.
Sheepadoodles love people and other dogs, and thrive where they have companionship of their people and/or other pets.

Can Sheepadoodles be left alone?
Sheepadoodles are incredibly sociable and intelligent, however they are also generally calm and content around the home.
As long as your Sheepadoodle receives lots of love, knows their place within the home, and is provided mental and physical stimulation - they are at ease being home alone during the day. Establishing a routine that is realistic and able to be maintained in the early days, is important (as with all dogs).
Ensuring environmental enrichment/puppy puzzles to keep them occupied - and a lounge or their bed for them to curl up and have a snooze, they will be more than happy at home without you.

Do Sheepadoodles like the water?
Most Sheepadoodles will not only like the water, but LOVE the water.
This can be accommodated with a shell pool in the backyard, or trips to the beach, pond, or dam if you have access.

Are Sheepadoodles good with children?
Yes, Sheepadoodles adore kids!
It is important to raise and socialise them appropriately (both the dog, and the kids).  Sheepadoodles are generally great with children, given their kind spirited and playful nature, with an eagerness to please and be involved in the family unit.

How much exercise does a Sheepadoodle need?
It is important to allow your Sheepadoodle to finish growing, before any hard impact or high drive activities are taken part in.
Avoid excessive high energy running, and going up and down stairs unnecessarily - until mature and growth plates have fully closed.
As an adult dog, Sheepadoodles will enjoy daily exercise and activities.
Physical exercise is important, but doesn't always need to be big walks every single day.
Mental stimulation and environmental enrichment is absolutely imperative to these intelligent dogs.
The Sheepadoodle is adaptable and versatile, enjoying regular physical activity - but don't forget to keep their brain happy too.

Are Sheepadoodles suited for first time dog owners?
Yes, Sheepadoodles have the potential to be the perfect first time family pet or companion.
Be prepared for grooming, training, and ongoing care - and you will be rewarded with the most loving and loyal sidekick and family pet.

Can Sheepadoodles be used for therapy work and as assistance dogs?
Yes! Sheepadoodles are intelligent, eager to please, food driven, social, and very people oriented. This makes them the ideal potential candidate for therapy and assistance work.
We have a number of our own past Sheepadoodles, who are excelling in their work careers as assistance and therapy dogs - across a range of fields.

Health, Concerns, and Screening
What health problems can Sheepadoodles have?
Sheepadoodles themselves are generally healthy, when well bred and appropriate health testing has been carried out.
Though hybrid vigour will reduce problems otherwise associated with purebred dogs, one cannot rely upon this alone.
Being a larger dog, Sheepadoodles can be at risk of hip and elbow dysplasia. Breeders should ensure hip and elbow scores are carried out for both parent dogs, in order to reduce this risk.
Ear infections can often result, due to those adorably big fluffy and floppy ears - paired with that love for water! Keep your Sheepadoodles ears clean and dry after a splash, and seek veterinary care if you notice any discolour or discomfort.

Health Testing for Sheepadoodles?
Both breeding dogs should be veterinary assessed prior to breeding - in addition to DNA Health testing, for each breed specific profile.
Hip and elbow scores are also required, for both parent dogs. Breeding dogs need to fully mature prior to radiographs being taken under general anaesthetic - which are then issued to an orthopaedic specialist for assessment, and determining suitability to be bred from.
Cardiologist heart certification, and ophthalmologist eye certification - will also be carried out by ethical breeders, with a high regard for health and welfare.

Life Expectancy
Sheepadoodles have a general life expectancy of 10-15 years, with most averaging over 12 years of age.
