Do's & Don'ts of Basic Feeding

Picture
We choose to feed all our dogs and puppies 'Royal Canin', which is a premium quality pet food. It is important your puppy is getting the right amount of food and nutrition throughout the day, however it is important to remember NOT to overfeed your puppy - and don't leave a full bowl of food to sit there all day. Small frequent feeds are the key to success, we feed our puppies 3 to 4 meals a day (for smaller toy breeds it is essential that they are fed a minimum of 4 feeds a day as puppies. Smaller and more frequent feeds, are required to maintain a  healthy blood-glucose level and avoid running into problems such as hypoglycaemia) . Leaving a full bowl of food to sit there all day allows for the biscuits to go stale, and encourages your puppy to become a fussy eater, which is something you definitely want to avoid. Make sure fresh, clean water is always available and easily accessible for your puppy or dog at all times.

Below are things to be aware of, some of what you can and cannot feed your dog - be mindful and always check with your vet if there is something your not too sure about.

Do
Do feel free to offer some of those listed below, as a healthy treat or as part of a balanced diet.
  • Lean Meats
  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Fruits such as apples, oranges, bananas, watermelon (avoid seeds)
  • Veggies including carrots, green beans, cucumber, zucchini, cooked pumpkin or sweet potato - my dogs love fresh, raw carrots!
  • Cooked white rice or pasta
  • Peanut butter - a yummy treat, great for KONGS
  • Chicken/soup stock - great to make frozen treats for a hot day!
Don't
Don't offer your dog any of the things listed below, if you have concerns please contact your vet immediately.
  • NO BONES! Cooked or raw bones can be hazardous and problematic. From broken teeth, choking, intestinal foreign body requiring surgery, constipation - its just not worth the risks.
  • Avocado
  • Onions (and garlic)
  • Caffeine
  • Grapes and raisins
  • Milk
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Chocolate and lollies
  • Fat trimmings - can cause pancreatitis
  • Cooked bones - of any sort may splinter and cause choking
  • Permmisons, peaches, plums
  • Moldy foods - no good for you or your dog
If any additional feeding tips are required, please feel free to contact us or your local veterinarian. For fun recipes specifically for your pooch, or fun summer time treats, feel free to contact us!
