History of the Poodle
The Poodle has long been a favourite for many, though they weren't always bred as the attentive companions that they more commonly are today. The Poodle was initially bred as a water retrieving dog, originating in Germany. The Poodle gained popularity in France, where it became more established. Poodles are highly intelligent dogs, that have been used not only to retrieve waterfowl, but to sniff out truffles as well. The Poodle has been involved in a range of activities over the years, including obedience trials, circus performances, herding, therapy and more, though has gained most popularity as a companion dog nowadays, rather than a working dog. Standard Poodles were the norm, which were later bred down to Miniature and Toy size, which better suited the more elite and upper class of France, looking for a fashionable little dog to prance by their side.
Personality, characteristics and temperament
The Poodle is incredibly smart, and ever so devoted and loyal to its family. An agile and alert dog, the Poodle will enjoy and benefit from walks and exercise. Incredibly affectionate towards their owners, the Poodle craves attention and loves to feel important. Gentle nature, and sweet disposition. Poodles are great companion and therapy dogs, and are well suited to family life. Poodles are able to adjust well to city, suburban and country living. As long as they are given love, activities and affection they will be happy.
Poodles are often 'responsible' characters, who are graceful yet lively and playful at the same time. Bright and attentive, a well socialised Poodle is a polite and gentle pet. Very intelligent, Poodles are fast learners. Contrary to popular belief - not all Poodles are highly strung and nippy. Poodles have the ability to learn quickly, and their owner must aid and guide their Poodle in the right direction. Good watch dogs that will let their family know of strangers or anything out of the ordinary. Protective and loyal, a Poodle will put their family first.
Grooming your Poodle
There are oh-so-many styles and ways to clip and groom your Poodle. The traditional means of clipping, back when the Poodle was a working dog in Europe - the coat was trimmed short to allow the dog to easily swim and glide through the water whilst retrieving, though kept longer over the lungs, joints, heart etc to keep warm and protect from cold waters. Nowadays we see similar grooms, however not serving the same purpose. The many fancy styles and Poodle clips are more the owners personal preference, and a fashion statement. There is a lot of fun to be had with the Poodles coat for fanciers, though we prefer to keep our own Poodles short-mid length all over.
Frequency will be determined by the style that one is after - some families choose to take their dog to the groomers for a 'puppy clip' every 6-8 weeks, while others choose to leave the coat longer, and simply 'bath and hygiene' groom their dogs as required (as little as 3-4 times per year, though more regular brushing is necessary for longer coat types to avoid matting).
Training Your Poodle
The Poodle was initially bred as a irking dog - hence its high trainability. The Poodle can be taught to do a number of things, and complete certain tasks. More commonly a smart companion dog, the Poodle has great talent in obedience and agility trials and is often used as a therapy dog. Be sure to socialise your Poodle with other people and pets from a young age, and do not allow for them to become the boss of you. A fast learner, teach your dog goof habits and not bad ones. We recommend puppy preschool for all puppies, and for any further socialisation and training, please contact us.
